Agri office to put radiation detectors in airports, seaports
May 12, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — To effectively gauge the radiation levels of agricultural products, particularly those coming from Japan, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to buy handheld radiation detector machines.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the agency will buy the Geiger counters that can check agricultural products for nuclear contamination.
Moreover, Alcala said agricultural products must have clearance from health authorities and laboratories that they have safe radiation levels.
“We have asked specifications from the DOST (Department of Science and Technology). We have asked for bidding of the equipment,” he said.
Once these equipments arrive, he said, hand-carried agricultural products such as dairy plants from Japan can be screened for nuclear contamination at the airports.
In Central Luzon, DA Regional Director Andrew Villacorta has yet to confirm whether some of these radiation detectors will be placed at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark Freeport and at the Subic Bay Freeport.
